WHAT IS YOUR TRAINING?

My background in sales and marketing is based on a lot of experience in the real world.

I studied Business at Kingston University, London in the late 70’s early 80’s and followed this up in 2001 with a Cert II in Wine Business Management from Curtin University, Perth, Western Australia. 

In 2007 and as part of my employment requirements at the time, I completed and attained an approved managers liquor licence from the Department of Racing, Gaming and Liquor here in WA.

What type of work and business experience did you have before arriving in Australia?

I joined the Royal Hong Kong Police Force in 1982 serving as an Inspector of Police in what was considered one of the last bastions of British colonial rule, and widely regarded as ‘The Pearl of the Orient’. 

I learnt the ‘hands on’ basics in advertising and marketing whilst employed with a yacht brokerage firm in Hong Kong in the late eighties and nineties. This was followed by a lengthy stint as general manager for an aspiring brand and marketing agency, specialising in golf apparel and equipment distribution covering the South East Asian and mainland China markets.

What brought you to Australia?

Shortly after the transfer of sovereignty in 1997 of Hong Kong Island and the New Territories to the Peoples Republic of China, an opportunity presented itself to relocate to Perth, Australia with my partner and daughter and where all of my family were now living.

WHEN DID YOU RELOCATE TO
MARGARET RIVER?

My first visit to Margaret River was in 2000, ostensibly for a short break from living in Perth. Like many others before us we instantly fell in love with the place, and were lucky enough to secure a rental property in the seaside community of Prevelly.

The opportunity came to purchase the property in 2001 after which we were well and truly committed to making this our home.

WHAT HAVE YOU DONE SINCE
ARRIVING IN MARGARET RIVER?

My early years in Margaret River allowed me the opportunity to try something completely different and I secured employment with a vineyard management company, learning the craft and trade of grape growing. However, it didn't take long for me to gravitate towards a more people oriented industry where I found myself working at Cape Mentelle Vineyards in a cellar door and hospitality role. 

Where did this lead you?

Shortly after this I was offered the position as Cellar Door manager, with responsibilities of front of house guest service and hospitality, with a strong focus on structured wine tasting and wine education.

I was fortunate to be involved from the ground up in establishing and marketing the regional benchmark
‘The Behind the Scenes Tour and Degustation’ experience and followed this up with the hugely popular 'Movies in the Vineyard' & 'Movies at Cape Mentelle' outdoor movies. 
 

Where does the passion come from in running your own consultancy business?

I BELIEVE TO BE SUCCESSFUL IN BUSINESS ONE HAS TO ‘OVER-DELIVER’ IN EVERY WAY.

Too many consulting businesses these days, are happy to take on the work but do not overly concern themselves with the results that ensue. It is important to me that my involvement results in not only achieving all of the stated goals required, but also demonstrates a clear and measurable strategy for the evaluation of these objectives.

Small businesses are run with passion and purpose and small business owners are the most passionate people I'VE met; they love what they do and I like to think that I am no different.
